Gail Baugh, PWSF president, will be traveling to Japan June 8-15, to visit with Teijin Frontier in Tokyo to discuss fiber and fabric innovations that can benefit our membership. Teijin Frontier is leading the textile industry’s efforts to reduce waste and recycle polyester fabrics into new high quality fabrics. Teijin Frontier has worked with PeopleWearSF members to show its high-quality fabrics produced from existing polyester fabrics, which reduces CO2 emissions, conserves petroleum resources, and reduces discarded textiles going to landfill.

Gail will also present a paper on PeopleWearSF Tablecloth Project, written collaboratively with Dr. Connie Ulasewicz, treasurer of PeopleWearSF and associate professor at San Francisco State University’s Apparel Design and Merchandising program, to the 4th International Fibre Recycling Symposium in Yokohama, Japan. Following the Symposium, Gail will present a lecture at Kanto Gakuin University. http://isonfiberrecycling.com/#about

There is continued interest in Gail’s book, The Fashion Designer’s Textile Directory in Asia, published by London’s Thames & Hudson for the world market, particularly China. It has been translated into 8 languages, including Chinese.

Hi everyone!

This is an invitation to the 2nd to the last Fabric Open house of the Spring 2014 season, an event so large it will be held over **two** days. As always, this event is only open to those with valid CA resale licenses. It’s not only a fabulous opportunity to request color cards of the season’s latest textiles but also to network with your fellow local manufacturers.

In addition to the open house, there will also be a “Fabric Purchasing 101″ lecture from 10-11:30am. As a former fabric buyer, I will go over the basics of fabric sourcing for *new* apparel manufacturers only, along with providing helpful advice, suggestions and recommendations. Also covered is how to write a proper PO. Cost of the lecture is $40 per person. Tickets WILL NOT be sold at the door. A CA resale license is not required to attend the lecture but is required to obtain color cards from any of the companies involved in the open house. Please note, there is no charge to attend the open house.

On display will be:

Robert Kaufman - New prints for April 2013, as well as new batiks, railroad denims and chambrays.

On display now through July 14, 2013

Advances in digital textile printing have brought about the widespread use in fashion design of a new range of prints in bold, eye-catching patterns and colors. Over the past two decades, technological advances in graphics software, photography and ink-jet printing have expanded the range of possible image sources, the potential for image manipulation, and the rapid production of intricate patterns in limitless colors. These digital tools also aid fashion designers in engineering the custom placement of a print on a garment as so the notion of the repeat in a print design that was once dictated by the limitations of production methods may now be based on aesthetic choices.

This exhibition featuring over 40 works by contemporary designers including Mary Katrantzou, Alexander McQueen, Ralph Rucci and Issey Miyake among others incorporate digitally printed textiles in their designs. In addition, a selection of works outlining the history of printed textiles from Phoenix Art Museum’s fashion design collection will give context to these revolutionary looks. Go to Phoenix Art Museum
